THE ALCHEMY OF LYOCELL
Perhaps you have already encountered lyocell under another name, as it is marketed under various trademarks such as Tencel®. In "lyocell" we can hear "cell", a contraction of "cellulose". For "lyo", it is better to practice ancient Greek! For anti dry, understand "dissolve". A dissolution of cellulose ... Yes, ecological clothing can also lead us to detours by chemistry! Lyocell is a fiber made from wood cellulose. This cellulose can come from eucalyptus, beech, bamboo ... It is crushed then dissolved with a non-toxic solvent, the NMMO, which is recycled in almost all. This closed circuit construction coupled with low water consumption makes the lyocell particularly ecological.
A SUSTAINABLE TEXTILE
If lyocell is an artificial fiber (unlike cotton, for example), it is made from a natural product, so renewable and biodegradable (unlike nylon or polyester, which are synthetic fibers from oil ). The purchase of clothes in biodegradable fibers is all the more urgent when you know that by the way, the synthetic clothes pollute the water of microparticles of plastic that it is impossible to filter! These tiny particles are ultimately a huge pollution: 500,000 tons of plastic spilled each year in our oceans ... With materials like lyocell, finished the damage!
The other ecological advantage of lyocell is to require much less surface than cotton to be produced. Trees such as eucalyptus trees will represent a much larger plant mass than cotton plants. On 2 000 m2 of forest, they will make it possible to manufacture 1 ton of lyocell where only about 200 kg of cotton would be produced.
Since lyocell is made from wood, the forests used for its production must be managed sustainably.
THE STRONG POINTS OF A CLOTHING IN LYOCELL
Lyocell is a material with particularly interesting technical characteristics. It is tough, breathable and absorbs moisture. Lyocell garments also have the advantage of being wrinkle-free and very soft, halfway between silk and cotton. Lyocell trousers or top is remarkably silky and fluid. When worn, it invariably seduces with its comfort. Easy to maintain, lyocell garments do not fluff and their colors have good durability.
